Mrs. Sirmans' Classes Construct Shelters in STEM Activity

Mrs. Sirmans' shared reading story for the past two weeks has been Tucket’s Travels by Gary Paulson. As a final activity, students had to work in groups using the design process to create shelters. This activity comes from the part in the story where the main character is forced to find shelter in the middle of nowhere for himself and children who are in his care. Like the boy in the story, the students had to use whatever materials were available. The final test was to see if their shelters would withstand high winds. The kids had a blast working together to design, create, and improve their designs.

BES Chamber Singers

The BES Chamber Singers is a select auditioned chorus that meets before school one day a week.  Students rehearse every Wednesday morning from 7:30am- 8:00am.  They perform throughout the community and at school events.  This group sings primarily pop, rock, and musical theater songs.

All students are expected to be present at rehearsals and performances that sometimes occur outside of the school day.  The students in this group are held to high academic and behavior standards in order to participate in this select ensemble.

Audition information:

Every fall 5th grade students who are interested in auditioning for the Chamber Singers, are required to have a signed permission slip and should have 10-15 seconds of a song prepared for their audition.  Auditions occur during their music class in the first few weeks of September.

Selection Criteria:

Students who are selected not only have clear singing voices, but also have voices that will blend well with other students in the group.  I also look for students who will bring positivity to the group.  Students who are selected are expected to be more responsible than their peers.  This group is a commitment and requires the student to be on top of all deadlines and performances.
